What Is MOTTAINAI Campaign?

"MOTTAINAI Campaign," an initiative proposed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, began in 2005.

The Japanese word "mottainai" is an expression of the 3Rs of environmental activities (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and of Respect for the irreplaceable resources of the earth, and is the global icon for protecting the environment. The MOTTAINAI movement aims to spread lifestyles that do not place a burden on the environment and to build a sustainable, recycling-oriented society.

What is the Green Belt Movement?

Wangari Maathai began her tree-planting activities as a non-governmental organization (NGO) in 1977.
This movement, which started with the planting of only seven trees, has so far planted approximately 51 million trees in Kenya and throughout the African continent.
A total of 100,000 people, mostly women suffering from poverty, have participated in the tree planting.
In addition to environmental preservation, tree planting has contributed greatly to the escape from poverty, the improvement of women's status, and the democratization of Kenyan society.
